ELLE

My head aches like someone is stepping on it when I wake up in the middle of the night.

Did I hear a phone ring? Was it a text coming through to Matviy’s phone that woke me up?

I feel like I’m swallowing gravel, like I could suck water from a hose and never get enough to drink. My throat is parched and even though I don’t want to get out of bed, I know there’s water in the bathroom and that I need to get something to drink.

Matviy stirs a little when I pull the covers back and get out of bed but he doesn’t really move and he doesn’t say anything. I wait to turn on the bathroom light until I have the door shut and locked and then I look at myself in the mirror.

I look terrible.

My face is drawn and tight, my eyes red and puffy from crying myself to sleep. I’d never want to admit to anyone how upset I was last night, but just when I thought I might be able to make a connection with Matviy, just when I thought he might be human and not just the monster he keeps showing me he is, he threw it all in my face.

I’m exhausted. Splashing some cold water on my face, I fill the glass on the edge of the sink and drain it, then do it again. My body craves the nice cool water and it tastes amazing to have so much of it right now. After I pee and brush my teeth, I open the door to the bedroom slowly, peeking through the crack to see if Matviy is still in bed.

He’s not.

Just the sight of the empty bed fills me with dread.

Where is he?

“Hello?” I step into the bedroom from the bathroom, my heart slamming hard. Even though the pajamas I have on are a lot more covering than what I was wearing when he brought me here, I still feel like I’m fully exposed. He could easily look at me and see everything.

It’s unnerving.

“Matviy?” My voice breaks on his name and I swallow hard. “Are you here?”

Nothing. From outside in the hall I hear the low rumble of his voice and I turn to walk in that direction, curiosity driving me on. I have no idea what he might be doing or who he’s talking to right now and I really want to find out. Pausing at the bedroom door, I glance both right and left down the hall.

There’s a crack of light coming from his office. The door is open, letting light pour out into the dark hall. He’d told me before in no uncertain terms that I was not to go into his office without permission.

I really want to know what he has in there and who he might be talking to.

Creeping down the hall, I press myself up against the wall outside his office. This is stupid and I know that, but now that I’m here, I’m dying to know who he’s talking to.
